Hello, and welcome to “WHO’S ON THE SHELF?” with yours truly, Nonnie Jules! Since we are a book club, you know we had to offer something that included a bookshelf. A lot of interviews merely cover an author’s work or an individual’s career stories. Here on this “SHELF,” we get down and dirty and ask the questions no other interviewer dare ask. We ask the questions that you want to open up a book and find the answers to on your favorite authors and fellow book club members, but, no one has dared to cover them. We get personal! Because, when you sit on this “SHELF,” YOU are an open book! Even if I have to pry you open!
Today, we have a very special guest on the SHELF with us, RRBC & RWISA member and our 2nd “SPOTLIGHT” Author of the year, BERNARD FOONG! We have been celebrating him for the past full month and today, he gets to sit on the shelf with me!
NJ: Before we get started, how do you like the design and feel of my new shelf? We updated it in 2017 and in all honesty, I can’t recall any accidents lately, so I think this redesign is working. Are you comfy?
Bernard: Yes, I am comfy, Nonnie. Thanks for having me on “WHO’S ON THE SHELF.
NJ: OK, good. Let’s start by confirming whether or not your author name is your birth name or a pen name:
Bernard: My author’s name, Young, is a pen name.
NJ: Young, please tell us where you were born?
Bernard: I was born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
NJ: Do you still live there now?
Bernard: No, I left Malaysia when I was 13 years old and went to an exclusive boarding school in England. I am British and the United Kingdom is my adopted country.
NJ: If not, what city and state are you calling home these days?
Bernard: I currently live on the island of Maui, Hawaii, U.S.A.
NJ: Bernard, are you married or single?
Bernard: I’ve been married for a little over a year to my longtime partner of 23 years.
NJ: Any kids? What kind? Do you like them?
Bernard: No kids.
NJ: Any pets? What kind? They act like kids, too, so I have to ask the question…do you like them?
Bernard: I love cats.
NJ: What’s the food that’s so good to you, you go to bed dreaming about it, and you forego breakfast just to get to it?
Bernard: The tremendous variety of Malaysian cuisine. I miss it very much.
NJ: What’s your favorite color:
Bernard: I don’t have a favorite color. I wear every shade under the sun. LOL!
NJ: Favorite sport:
Bernard: If you can call ballet a sport, then ballet is my favorite sport. 😊
NJ: Favorite TV Show:
Bernard: Currently, I’m into VICTORIA (PBS series). I love most of the shows on PBS.
NJ: Favorite Actress/Actor:
Bernard: I don’t have a favorite actress or actor. My favorite actress/actor changes on the performance of their role in each individual movie.
NJ: Do you like to exercise to stay fit OR do you not mind walking around with a beer belly?
Bernard: I am an exercise aficionado. I do several fitness classes per week. From Barre, Abs Solution, Zumba, Weights workouts to long distance walking.
NJ: Biggest pet peeve that makes you want to spit nails? (For the record, NJ does not condone violence, but she does believe in being honest, so she admits that there are those times and there are those people, who do cause her to want to spit a few nails in the direction of their foreheads. Hey, just being honest. It’s the only way I roll).
Bernard: My modus operandi is the 3Ps – Perseverance, Patience, and Persistence. Therefore, my pet peeve would be those who demand and believe that things should be handed to them without working for it.
NJ: So, are you neat or messy?
Bernard: A neat freak. LOL!
NJ: Somehow, I could tell that about you, Bernard! Birds of a feather, you know…. Bernard, are you nice or mean? And, is that your perception of you, or is that what others think of you?
Bernard: Nice. That is the perception of me and others. 😊
NJ: Well, good! Facebook or Twitter?
NJ: We’ve come to realize that the internet is giving way to tons of budding friendships. Who would you say is the one person you’ve connected with the most…your internet BFF or buddy?
Bernard: For me, a BFF or bosom buddy is someone who I can have a face to face personal relationship. Although the internet offers budding friendships, I wouldn’t consider any of my internet friends a BFF or bosom buddy.
NJ: OK, but I did say your “internet” BFF or buddy. So, is there one person that you’ve met online who makes you laugh the hardest?
Bernard: None thus far.
NJ: Who do you favor most: Nonnie Jules or WonderWoman? Be honest
Bernard: LOL! Since I don’t know WonderWoman at all, my choice will be Nonnie Jules.
NJ: Thanks, Bernard. I don’t know how I feel about winning by default, but, OK.
Now, we all know that WonderWoman has her truth lasso and Nonnie has…well, just her truths, in the no-nonsense way she forces us to be honest and tell it like it is, whether it makes others uncomfortable or not. In your opinion, which one does a better job of making the world a better place? You can be honest here, too.
Bernard: Well, WonderWoman is a fictional character and her “truths” are in make-believe films/movies/comic books. Therefore, in my opinion, Nonnie Jules does a better job of making the world a better place since she is a real person doing what she does best. 😊
NJ: Now, that kind of flattery I can live with. Thank you! Name two favorite INDIE books that you’ve read by RRBC members:
NJ: ONE good INDIE book you’ve read written by an RRBC member that was so good you wished the entire world would read it:
Bernard: “SUGARCOATIN’ IS FOR CANDY & PACIFYIN’ IS FOR KIDS!” by Nonnie Jules.
NJ: WOW! What a compliment! So glad you enjoyed it. Now I must take it down and make it perfect. OK, so tell us, what was so great about “SUGARCOATIN’…?
Bernard: Because it is a no-nonsense book.
NJ: Well, since I wrote it, I guess I would have to agree with you. Thanks, again! Let’s move on. After you read books, do you post reviews?
NJ: What do you think readers should base their reviews on?
Bernard: In my opinion, my reviews are based on the plot/storyline and how well the author’s writing stirs the reader’s personal emotions to identify with the characters in the book.
NJ: Are you one of those who is afraid to be honest in their reviews lest the author gets upset with you, or is honesty your best policy, especially in reviews?
Bernard: Honesty is the best policy.
NJ: Read any poorly written books lately?
NJ: How many poorly written books have you read that you gave high marks to in your reviews when you knew they were horrible reads? Be honest, I won’t ask you to name the books here in public.
Bernard: A few and I had given them 2 or 3-star reviews.
NJ: So glad that you’re able to be honest in your reviews. Bernard, are you an author? Are you a good one? C’mon, we love honesty here.
Bernard: Yes, I am an author and over the eight years I’ve been writing, my penmanship has improved by leaps and bounds.
NJ: How long have you been writing?
Bernard: Coming to nine years. I started my first book – A Harem Boy’s Saga – I – Initiation; a memoir by Young in the Spring of 2011.
NJ: Are you able to take constructive criticism of your written work?
Bernard: I believe so.
NJ: Give us the name of two books that you’ve written, please…
Bernard: A Harem Boy’s Saga; a memoir by Young (this is a 5-book series)
NJ: Which one do you think is the best out of the series?
Bernard: These books are a part of my autobiography. It is difficult to pinpoint which is better than the other since it’s a continuation of my young life. But if I have to choose, I would say A Harem Boy’s Saga – V – Metanoia; a memoir by Young because it is a tear-jerker ending to an epic love story.
NJ: Do you have a blog or website? I love GREAT blogs, so would you say that yours is written well enough for harsh critics like me to enjoy?
Bernard: Take a look and let me know what you think.
Blog: http://bernardfoong.typepad.com/in_the_harem (my blog site is mainly a book promotion site for authors).
Website: http://aharemboysaga.com/wp/ (this site is solely for A Harem Boy’s Saga; a memoir by Young – book series).
NJ: Which online resource or organization has helped you as an author the most?
Bernard: Most definitely: Rave Reviews Book Club.
NJ: Great! How has the club helped you?
Bernard: Through the support and encouragement from fellow authors/members in the RRBC family.
NJ: Well, I’m glad to hear that, Bernard. Since you’re sitting on the SHELF, you’re obviously a RAVE REVIEWS BOOK CLUB member, so what do you think of the club?
Bernard: I have benefited greatly from my 4 years of being a member of Rave Reviews Book Club.
NJ: Have you come across any other online entities like it?
NJ: Would you recommend it to your friends and family?
Bernard: Of course!
NJ: What’s your most favorite program or place here within RRBC? (#PUSHTUESDAY, RAVE WAVES Shows, Block Parties, Writers’ Conference & Book Expo, BOOKS OF THE MONTH discussions, “ON THE SHELF” interviews, etc.)
Bernard: Writers’ Conferences & Book Expos.
NJ: This shelf is getting hard on my hiney, so we’re going to wrap this interview up. Any final words for our listening audience today?
Bernard: Join Rave Reviews Book Club now. You’ll not regret your decision to be a part of this supportive family. I didn’t.
NJ: Bernard, thank you so much for joining me here today and thank you for being such a supportive member, the route that landed you in this beautiful hot seat this month.
I don’t know if our guests will be as highly entertained by this wonderful interview as they have been by many in the past. Typically the responses from my guests tend to raise my brows a bit and ruffle my feathers a tad and sometimes, well, it gets a little dangerous on this shelf (for the guests). You answered almost all of your questions just perfectly, so, there’s no drama for them to see here, and you know how some of these folks thrive off of shelf-drama. But, we’ll see.
To my guests, please pick up a copy of either of Bernard’s books. He’s a really good writer so I’m sure you’ll enjoy them.
Have you joined RAVE REVIEWS BOOK CLUB yet? Well, here’s your chance! And, since Bernard was on the “SHELF” today, tell them he sent you.
Until next time, take care. We’ll see you next month, right here on the “SHELF” with another INTERESTING GUEST!!
