Visiting this page reminded me of the problem some of us were having with outlook extensions and followers on wordpress sites. Well I’m happy to report that those extensions have stopped following both my blogs and with no followup notice from wordpress.
So I hope to never see this activity again and I hope the rest of you who experienced this same phenomenon are also getting the same positive results.
Have a great day!

I have a question. I’ve recently started a new blog (haven’t launched it yet) When I sign in with AOL Gold, it seems to work fine. The side bar is located on the right side (where it should be), the menu is located under the heading photo (where it should be). Where I run into trouble–when I log in with Chrome, everything changes. The sidebar is at the end of the page, the menu is non-existent, the left side menu where you can make changes etc is nowhere to be found. Sometimes I can find the right photos, other times I can’t. (grrr) I’m frustrated. There are other issues, but I can’t think of them at the moment.
Do any of you have similar issues? I’d appreciate any feedback.
BTW my webhost was Blue Host but I found it difficult to work with . I unsubscribed from BH and went straight to Webpress. I seem to work better with them.
I’m not good at this stuff. It is interesting when I don’t get lost and/or frustrated.

Hi, Patricia! I’ve never had this issue. I’ve been with WordPress for 5+ years now. I have heard of people having issues between different web browsers, but I’m unfamiliar with AOL Gold. Have you tried editing your page thru the Chrome browser to see how it turns out?

Dear Patricia,
I had horrendous issues with Chrome to the point that on the suggestion of my smartphone representative, I changed to Mozilla Firefox and all my problems went away. I was trying to delete and create a new gmail account and something started happening with the old gmail (it wouldn’t go away) and all my social media accounts. Somehow all the problems I was having were connected and the moment I moved to Mozilla everything cleared up.
I’m not sure what you are experiencing because I don’t understand your issue, but maybe using Mozilla instead of chrome might make a difference in your situation. I use Mozilla for all my google needs. How crazy is that? lol

Shirley, Foxit should work perfectly well. It may be that MS support installed it by by-passing your anti-virus programme. Now your AV programme thinks Foxit is rogue. To get it working properly you may need to uninstall the Foxit on your computer and then install a fresh copy from the Foxit site. That way it will be registered by your AV programme as legal and shouldn’t cause problems. Hope this helps.

That’s exactly what happened. It makes sense because Microsoft did not charge me for that precise reason. Now I am able to choose between Xodo and Adobe. I won’t go back to Foxit for now.
It’s amazing what you learn. Thanks Gordon.

Following Jan’s question, now I have one. I have WINDOWS 10 and MICROSOFT OFFICE 13 and from day one I have had nothing but trouble with my pdf files. It comes up with default (TWINN) that I try to switch to Adobe Reader. The file opens with Microsoft Edge and I hate it. When I get what should be Adobe, a file comes in and I cannot navigate through pages, because there are no tabs for that, nor to jump to end of page or back to home. So I have to scroll each page and that takes up too much time. I try getting Adobe and an error window comes up.
I hate Microsoft Edge with a passion because I could not bookmark my internet pages or migrate them over, so I went back to Mozilla Firefox because I hate Chrome as well.
I’m in the middle of re-editing and re-formatting my first book OLV because when I left the original publisher and moved over to Createspace, some formatting problems cropped up, pictures were missing and some editing was never corrected. I don’t want to get my pdf file back and go through the scrolling situation I am experiencing right now.
I wonder if this is waking you all up.? If anybody understands what I am talking about, please help me get an adobe file that works.
By the way I had my password ability removed because I never registered correctly and it kept asking me for two different ways to log in. And if you can’t log in, you can’t get your files. So now I just go in like old times. They also wanted to charge me to use Cloud once I went over their free service, so I pulled all my files out and went back to saving on a removable disk.
I am no longer getting automatic updates and I no longer have to purchase a new updated program every year. (They cost in the hundreds of dollars) Maybe I need to go back to their yearly subscription.

After ranting about this issue it dawned on me that I may need to become a subscriber of Microsoft because I think I’m missing out on some important updates which is why I’m having so many problems. This is their way of punishing you if you don’t continue to buy their products. I loathe them.

Hi Shirley. Windows opens files based on default choices. You can change the choice and inform Win 10 which program you want to open a pdf . That should stop MS Edge. A quick search on how to change default programs in Win10 should explain how. Hope this helps.

Jan it turns out I still wound up talking to microsoft support. They took control of my computer to troubleshoot. Turns out Adobe has a glitch so the rep put my files on another acrobat reader called Foxit, until Adobe is resolved. I do have a call in to them.

I have a dilemma that I hope someone can give me some pointers on. I am pulling down my first book, “Flowers and Stone,” and re-editing. I have learned SO much since that first attempt and I want to make it better. That’s not my dilemma. I have a beautifully formatted .pdf document. But, I cannot find a way to edit that document and keep the formatting without paying Adobe a fairly large sum of money. I know I can edit my original Word doc, but don’t have the knowledge required to format. Any suggestions? Should I just bite the bullet and pay Adobe?

Thanks so much. I know I could convert the document back to a Word file, but I am afraid I’d lose all the beautiful formatting when I save it back as a PDF. I appreciate your input. Hi Jan, Your question is one that I’m sure a lot of us would like to know the answer to. Right now, I am re-vamping my first book and to my horror, when I left the original publisher, they failed to send over all the pictures and the size was all wrong. Some pictures were completely missing. Createspace never questioned the trim size until I questioned them. I still don’t understand how pictures got lost, so I am getting it all re-formatted correctly. I’m stressing over this.

This rule is leaving me speechless (well, almost) the comma before a complete sentence.
John went to the store and purchased eggs, milk and cheese. No comma before the and.
John went to the store , and he purchased… So I placed the comma before and and “Grammarly” took it
out. What gives with that? Is that a new trend? What do you think? Is there a way you can control Grammarly?

Hi, Patricia. I have had similar issues with Grammarly, so I look at each instance to determine whether or not Grammarly is reading the sentence in the context that I am writing it. I don’t think it’s a new trend, I just think it’s an example of how something electronic can never be the ultimate or perfect editor. I don’t believe there is a way to control or change the way it is programmed. Best of luck! 🙂

I mean I did get a lot of great feedback on my book and have done a lot to try to promote it but it just seems I can’t sell any more books. I am currently waiting on edits on book two and have started on a third book but there are days where I just wonder if it is all worth it. I mean I am not seeking fortune and fame but would like to see my book doing better than it currently is. Self-doubt stinks, lol.

Hello, Frank. You suffer from something that affects all of us writers – Self-doubt. You have to go back to the original thought about why you wanted to write a story. What was the passion? If you can recapture that feeling, you will push forward no matter how loud that voice of self-doubt gets. There are millions of authors out there, but there is only one you. Stay true to you and tell the story you are inspired to write.

Hi,
I could really use some help here. I have a manuscript sitting on my desk that I wrote a couple of years ago…before I actually starting publishing my novels. The WIP title is Sex for Money… The question is about genre. It’s fiction, but reads like an expose, about a female journalist who decides to take a work/break in Puerto Vallarta for a few months and write a story about male prostitution. So basically the story is sexy, with adult matter obviously, and consists of interviews and interactions with several men who sell their bodies for money. I have no idea what genre this would be as I normally write thriller, suspense, action, mystery. I pulled it out last night and started edits… and decided it was relatively steamy in parts. I would welcome any suggestions you can make. Thanks so much.

Hy, Lynda. What I’ve learned about steamy novels is that the genre they fit into depends on the heat level. How explicit are your sex scenes? Are they graphic? If so, would it be considered Erotica? If not, I’d call it Contemporary Fiction. That’s my two-cents worth of input. 🙂 Good luck!

Hi, Lizzie – the reply feature not coming up for you, so I’m doing a fresh post for your query on Createspace templates from a design PoV. I’ve heard iffy things about quality for Createspace and in the last few days I’ve had direct experience PDFwith Amazon’s new POD venture with Kindle Paperbacks.
Both do indeed provide templates for the internal content, and have an online cover maker that automatically calculates the spin width etc.
No issues with the internal content templates, which are simple to use for non-designers.
With the cover I had done by Kindle Paperbacks, I was extremely disappointed with the spine and back cover design elements as, unlike the front cover, these did NOT allow for uploads of your own files (save for an author pic). You can choose the font and size used, but there’s very little adjustable tinkering within that and the result for me, was that the back blurb was inadequately spaced and looks awful. I can’t speak for Createspace from experience, but would think it’s not a lot different as it’s
a) still part of the Amazon group and
b) uses templates based on professional standard offerings from Amazon’s main POD distributor Ingrams (who operate as POD printers Lightning Source for commercial users and Ingrams Spark for indies)
From a design perspective, if you regularly use Adobe products like PhotoShop, Illustrator, InDesign and Acrobat Pro (PDF creator/editor) professionally then you’ll probably not be too impressed with the ‘takeaway’ approach so far as the cover’s concerned… I use Lightning Source and typically it costs me around £26 per title with an electronic proof for physical books – they do hard and paperback options too. This not only gets your book onto Amazon, but also hosted with Barnes & Noble, Borders, Waterstones and many other global class bookstores, so, although you have to pay to publis,h the services provided are PRINT on demand ONLY (no design, editorial services or ISBN etc) and gets you the broadest possible distribution, because they do it for everyone, not just Amazon.
And their quality is excellent!

I also run a networking hour on Twitter called #creativebizhour It trends every week and is a great way to promote writing. We have millions of views in an hour each week and tens of thousands of RT’s. Just addd the # to tweets 8-9pm (GMT) every Monday, then RT others using the hashtag and join in with the chat to tell people about your books. People usually RT in return. Your work is then seen by their followers when they RT your tweets. It widens your audience and works by mutual support.

Also, after a point, the music kind of bored me. I know that the music suits the theme of the book, and I liked it when the trailer first started. Maybe because the trailer is so long, the music became repetitive. I think if you shortened the trailer a bit, it would be borderline awesome. 😃

Hi Luke – I’m in agreement with Rhani that overall the video is too long. The slideshow aspect is really working for you as it transitions through some lovely images, but the footage of the hooded processional, whilst being beautifully filmed, takes up far too much of the time and leaves huge holes in your narrative. I would certainly keep some of the imagery from that sequence as it’s stunning with the torchlight etc, but if you’re able to, I’d consider having a voice over narration for that section, or even the whole thing, with the music as a background and maybe fading out at the 2 minute mark, which seems to be the average length for these trailers so you can pack all your good stuff into it.
There are plenty of good (and free) voice recording apps out there, so doing a voice over needn’t be costly and they’re fairly easy to add to most media software – you have all the ingredients for a great trailer there already, it just needs some judicious editing! 😉

Thank you Jan. I agree it is long and I will aim to bring it down to 2 minutes. I will give it to someone else to do as I am too attached to much of the film footage. i now realise that the footage needs to be cut to suit the purpose of a promo and not be selected to fit the music and showcase the images.

But even if you don’t, I will be happy to promote your stuff if you send me the links. 😃

You’ve been liked and I also liked a lot of posts of other RRBC members. My facebook page is https://www.facebook.com/kimcoxauthor and my book link is http://goo.gl/qpTVRz.

Rhani, make sure you submit your facebook link to NJ to get your page approved. Then your link will be posted on the Approved Members Blog & Sites where you can go and like other authors pages and they will like yours. Here is the link for instructions: https://ravereviewsbynonniejules.wordpress.com/how-we-profile-promote-propel/approved-member-blogs-websites/.
Telling you this just reminded me that I need to check the site again to like new member’s pages.

Thank you for the information, Shirley. I followed the link, and it looks like they are all blogs as opposed to Facebook pages. But I will check into it. *Hugs*

Thank you, Shirley. I am thinking that I’m going to have to get my website up and running before I can make any ads that will work, but I’m not sure. I just know I’m having trouble. Lol

Has anyone done any Facebook ads for their books that are on Amazon? I’m trying to do that, but am having trouble. Any help would be appreciated.

That’s my plan but I’m not there yet. Now I know who to come to when you figure it out. 🙂 I heard there’s a way to target fans of other authors that you write in the same genre of.

Kim, yes you can. My problem is in the formatting of the actual ad because I can’t seem to get my link to my Amazon page into the ad and that’s what I need help with.

I am reluctant to buy anything from facebook as I don’t trust that you will get your moneys worth. I had a web company create a facebook page dedicated to my first book and have yet to see anything from that and I have almost 500 followers. So sorry I can’t help you.

Re-pasted from the homepage – this query has come in from EILEEN THORNTON today!
Happy New Year to you all! May 2016 be a great year.
Also, if anyone is reading these messages today, could someone please explain how I can gift an ebook? I can’t find anywhere that allows me to add a different email or Kindle address. It only seems to show ‘Eileen’s Kindle’ It’s all so frustrating!! Thank you.
I’ve had difficulties with redeeming unspecified gift vouchers (just for an amount rather than a specified title) from Amazon.com as it can only be used on the US site (I live in the UK and can only purchase eBooks on the UK site) so where you and your giftee’s resident may be an issue when using a gift voucher, but I recently redeemed a voucher for a specified eBook that went through OK on my UK account, though it was sent from the US so I really don’t know what the drill is or whether it’s changed… If you know, please tell us how it works! 😀

Thank you Gordon and Maggie! I actually have both Hootsuite and Tweetdeck but haven’t spent enough time playing with them to see how they work. I will try a bit more this weekend. 🙂

Is there anyone out there that knows a quite bit about Round Team and Crowdfire and anything else that may help me cut down my time on Twitter? (please understand that I didn’t know what a tweet was three or four weeks ago and my idea of social media was watching tv in a group!) I seem to be ok with TweetJukebox… at least until they start charging in Nov.
I really want to help everyone by retweeting and responding, but I have a new idea for a book and several blogs and it seems Twitter has now taken up all my time trying to keep up. I know these tools can help, but I’m having trouble getting them to work.

I don’t know anything about those two. But there are a couple of free sites where you can schedule your tweets in advance. There’s Future Tweets and Hootsuite. Both are free although Hootsuite also has a premium service. The free part is fine. Future Tweets is simpler but with Future tweets I believe you can add pictures. I didn’t see this option with Future Tweets although they do have icons you can add. Future tweets is http://futuretweets.com/ and Hootsuite is https://hootsuite.com/.

Meant with future tweets you can’t add pictures but can with hootsuites.

Sherilyn I have been wondering what I am going to do when I stop using Jukebox. As you stated they are going to a payment site and the freebies will offer you limited amounts you can tweet. So I am looking around too. I’m going to spend next week removing my tweets from them. I need something new and I’m looking for a site that will help me in my retweets as well. Right now I’m doing those myself and its difficult trying to keep up. Anyone out there who can help will be most appreciated.

I know that Hootsuite works with scheduled tweets, but I’m not sure how many you can schedule. I switched to Jukebox because it was more user friendly. Also, you can download all your tweets at once to a CSV file (Excel uses these) but I’m not sure what it does with the pictures. I think it retains the info from them too. I will try to find time to play and if it works I will let you know!

Speak to Lizabeth Scott, she uses Hootsuite and she said she can schedule a month or more of tweets in advance.

Hi Sherilyn – I use TweetDeck which is owned by Twitter. I haven’t found any limit on the number. The tweets aren’t stored. So either you go back through your Used tweets and copy them or keep a Word file with all your tweets then copy and paste into TweetDeck and schedule when you want it to go out. I copy mine into a Word file and it keeps pics and links together. It’s free to use. Hope this helps.

Hi Sherilyn. I use Hootsuite. I can program many tweets, posts, etc. and set them for several times a day or quite a ways in the future – I’ve done up to 2 or 3 months. You can have up to five accounts under a free version. It is really easy to use.

Gordon & Maggie, I’m going to make note of your suggestions. I know of hootsuite but used it temporarily to help someone else and never went back to see what it could actually do. I will re-visit it.

Hi Sherilyn,
I like roundTeam for re-tweeting. It’s simple and you can configure what you want to retweet with filters so you dont end up retweeting profanity and/or porn.
I like TweetDeck for looking at what you should reply to or what conversations you might want to participate it. I love the way masses of tweets stream on past and doing so helps you see what tweets (and kind of tweets) stand out from the noise.
I like tweeting pictures, but many of the available tools only include them as links… except Klout which is free and lets you schedule “lots” (I dont exactly know how many) of tweets with embedded pics. I’m guessing using Klout also probably helps improve your Klout score too (it that’s something you’re looking for).
HootSuite is not bad, but I find the user interface annoying. It does let you schedule a lot of tweets, but it doesn’t include pictures “properly” in my opinion. It doesn’t stop me using it, but I just dont use it exclusively.
Buffer (bufferapp.com) is also really good. It’s very simple even the free version lets you schedule about 10 tweets which you can keep topping up.
I hope that helps.

Thank you Garrett! I will definitely check out Klout too.
One problem I’m having with RoundTeam is it isn’t saving my lists. I can enter one, hit the checkmark and nothing happens. It looks like my Following works ok, but nothing else. I’m going to contact support soon.
I am not really sure about the filters for Roundteam. I was able to put in #RRBC, and twitter handles for our members who don’t use #RRBC, but what is a good set up for Minimum RT, Max/hr etc?

Sherilyn, you do need to get a handle on the RoundTeam filters! If nothing else, make sure you engage the profanity an sensitive media filters … unless you want to end up retweeting something you dont want to. (Case in point, some RRBC friends were happy to point out that I’d unknowingly retweeted some really explicit pics. Nothing wrong with that probably … except that I was making a push into book clubs at the time.)
As for what to set, it really depends on how many “things” (e.g. hashtags) you want to take an interest in. If you want to focus on one hashtag, perhaps you might like to retweet it more regularly (e.g. max of 5 per hour), but I wouldn’t recommend retweeting at that rate for a number of hashtags. Bear in mind too that each of the round team levels have limits on how much you’ll be able to retweet.
The best advice I can give on this front is to try something, give it a week and then revisit it. Tweak it a little and then see if you get better or worse results, repeat.
I probably should mention ManageFlitter.com too. It is a great service (free and paid) with some great tools. The more I play with it, the more I find. If nothing else, everyone could use the unfollow tools to see who aren’t following back.

Hi,
I have a question: when writing a character who is asking a question in dialog, do you then put he said or he asked? I always thought “he asked” was redundant, but that has recently come under question.
Thanks
