I am trying to be better about posting which books I’ve read and reviewed. From this genre, I’ve read and reviewed Our Lady of Victory: The Saga of an African-American Catholic Community by Shirley Harris-Slaughter.

IMPORTANT! PLEASE READ THIS FIRST BEFORE YOU POST A REVIEW IN HERE
Because it’s needed apparently – a few words from Nonnie about posting reviews away from the main BOOKCLUB SELECTIONS FOR REVIEW (CATALOG) page…
“ATTENTION: PLEASE POST YOUR PURCHASES, READS AND REVIEWS ON THE MAIN BOOK CLUB SELECTIONS FOR REVIEW PAGE. THANK YOU!”
The reason for this is that Beem’s spread pretty thin and if you post away from the main page he may not pick up that you’ve done the review and so you won’t get credited for it…
BE SURE TO EMAIL BEEM at ravereviewsbookclub@gmail.com ATTN: REVIEWS as well as sharing your reviews on the MAIN CATALOG page – that way your efforts won’t be missed! 😉

You cannot wipe away the inborn prejudice in human affairs when the only tools you have are the bureaucracies of Church and State, two institutions seen as slow to move in the direction of social progress. Our Lady of Victory is the story of a marginalised community, one that mobilised itself in the face, at worst, of outright opposition, or at best indifference. Any social grouping can find itself saddled with outsider status, but to have been a black Catholic in Detroit in the ’40s and ’50s and at the height of the Civil Rights movement is outsiderdom twice over. Our Lady of Victory is the story of great human courage and determination in the face of that double disadvantage, told through the personal testament of black Catholics living in Detroit through those periods, through the author’s own experience, and through Church records and other source material. It raises wider questions than those located in one community only. What, as individuals, are our best chances? Do we form into cohesive units according to what we perceive as our identity, and if we do are we dividing ourselves from others at our peril? There are so few answers, easy or otherwise, to our social problems.

Peter I am just noticing your review of OLV. Yes its sad that I had to find this out through research. When you are sheltered its hard to see the problems. I remember a warm wonderful family of church goers and classmates. Thank you so much for your support and I’m glad you enjoyed the book. Sorry it took me so long to respond. lol

Thank you all for being so supportive. All of you got a copy and Peter thank you for joining the ranks. A voice just kept after me to write the story and ignoring it didn’t make it go away. So that was my introduction into the world of writing and becoming published. I’m sure most of you got there on a similar path. We authors are a strange bunch. I appreciate you and RRBC so much.
